As we know, Nastasya has lived for 400 hundred years, yet her life never seems to get any easier. In Immortal Beloved we see her leave everything behind to find meaning at River's Edge, a safe haven for wayward immortals. While at River's Edge she learned to embrace new things and began to respect life despite some drama involving Reyn, and another immortal who wanted her dead. And once a few things have been dealt with it seems like she is getting back on track with her life. However, just as Nastasya is getting comfortable, with somethings, she is forced to leave River's Edge because of her family's ties to dark magic, which she thinks will be her own downfall. Scared she will succumb to the dark Nastasya, believe it or not, soon falls back into her old ways when she is reacquainted with old friends and we learn not everyone is as friendly as they are making out.

I really enjoyed this book, more than Immortal Beloved. We see Nastasya grow as a character and the flashbacks help us to understand her and her life all the better. We also get introduced to River's past which is intriguing and not as good as one may think. I often find in difficult in books when we are transported back in time via flashbacks but not with Tiernan's writing, she makes the past as real and believable as the present. The flashbacks only add to this story giving it real depth.

I love the tangled web that is Nastasya and Reyn's relationship. They have all ready been through so much and I often find myself sat on the fence as to what I want from their relationship. But as Nastasya starts to see her past through different eyes so do we and half way through this story I was routing for them to be together.

Tiernan's writing is captivating and her characters endearing. She knows how to create a world a reader can get lost in, without your knowing, and I can't wait to get lost in books three!

Review ~ Wolf Mark ~ Joseph Bruchac

Wolf Mark is a clever mix of the sci-fi, action adventure and genres. It tells the story of Luke who like any teenager is desperate to blend in with the rest of society but is clearly destined not to. Aside from the fact that he carries a strange wolf mark on his skin and often displays wolf-like tendencies he is highly skilled in survival techniques having been trained by his father who is a member of the black ops. While his family are still recovering from the loss of Luke’s mother, Luke seems to find himself being plagued by a group of Russian teenagers that have moved into the area. He also finds himself trying to pluck up the courage to ask out Meena, a young Pakistani girl who attends school with him and like a lot of teenage boys, struggling to do so!

The story really starts to take off when Luke’s father is kidnapped. After following a series of pre-planned clues Luke finds himself at Drake House, a deserted mansion where he discovers his ‘second skin’, that is the final element that will complete his transformation from human to skinwalker, a creature which possesses all the strengths of the wolf but also retains the abilities of a human to some degree.

It is also after his father is kidnapped that Luke discovers that he has more in common with the Russian kids at school than he first thought and that they actually have a common enemy in the multinational organisation, Maxico, who have taken up residence in their local community and who appear to be linked to the disappearance of Luke’s father. From this point on Bruchac creates an intricate web of corporate conspiracy, greed, and the desire for world domination which he ties to ancient folklore regarding the world of the skinwalker.

I like the intricate details that Bruchac includes in this story. Two things that particularly stand out are the way that he describes Luke’s transformation into the skinwalker which is nicely described and the information that he provides with regards to the folklore that surrounds the skinwalkers. I also liked the cultural discrepancies that he highlighted between Luke and Meena as they tried to forge a relationship. One thing I wasn’t really sure of at first was whether Luke knew he was a skinwalker and was just waiting for the right time to transform or whether he was just ignorant and experiencing wolf-like symptoms and I did find that a bit frustrating. I may have missed something in reading but I felt that further clarification might have helped. I also found the way that Luke spoke as a wolf irritating sometimes. Having said that the language that Bruchac uses is very descriptive and whilst there is some mushy stuff in this book it’s fairly minimal so I think that this may also appeal to the male YA reading faction more than other books might.

Rating: 3 out of 5. I would recommend this book for younger readers of the YA fiction genre or indeed those who enjoy the younger end of the range.

Sit down, Phee.’

‘No, I have to go. You’ve got to let me go!’ I scrambled

round him to the door.

‘Xav!’ shouted Yves.

‘I’m there.’ His bloody brother was in the hallway blocking

the door.

Yves guarded the way through to the kitchen. ‘You’re not

going anywhere. I thought you understood that.’

I hung between them like a person stuck halfway down a

zip wire, dangling with no way of getting the motion to go on.

‘No, no, it’s you who doesn’t understand. He’ll hurt me.’

Yves held out a hand to me. ‘Phee, I won’t let anyone hurt

you.’

I stood poised for fl ight by the coffee table, my reflection in

the wall mirror telling me l looked like a demented pixie, hair

sticking out every which way. No wonder they weren’t taking

me seriously. ‘You don’t know the Seer. It’s not that simple. If

I hadn’t stolen the water from you today I’d be pretty much

dead—he’d made it so I couldn’t eat or drink until I did the

job. He . . . he does stuff to your mind, makes you obey. If he

catches me, he could tell me to murder you . . . or . . . or jump

off a bridge . . . and I’d do it, too.’

Yves fl inched, not so confident now that he had the answer

to everything. He looked to his brother, seeking reassurance.

‘I’ve told Vick to get back as soon as possible,’ Xav confirmed.

They were using telepathy, keeping me out of the loop.

‘Just stop it—how do you think I feel knowing you’re talking

behind my back!’ I grabbed a stack of magazines and chucked

them at Yves, fl ipping them like Frisbees.

‘Calm down. You’re free of him, Phee, this Seer person.

You’re staying with me.’ Batting away the missiles, Yves used a

soothing tone that right now only wound me up. This was not

the moment for being cool and reasonable!

‘Shove that: what about Tony?’ I threw a cushion at him.

Yves caught it. ‘Tony?’

‘My friend! You can’t keep him safe too, can you? If I’m not

back by nine then he’ll get so hurt and I promised—I promised

him I’d keep my side of the deal. Oh God, oh God.’ Strength

giving out, I folded in on myself and hunched in the doorway.

‘Xav?’ Yves rushed to me.

‘I’m on it.’ Xav placed a warm hand on my back and flooded

me with his sedative touch. ‘She’s exhausted and run down,

Yves. We’ve got to be very careful with her; she won’t be able

to take much more. She’s so strung out, more pressure could

make her snap.’

‘I’ve got to go back,’ I whispered.

Review ~ Tris and Izzie ~

Tris and Izzie is a remake of the classic tale Tristan and Isolde and based on that and the stunning cover which I absolutely fell in love with I was eager to get my hands on this book. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much where the enthusiasm ends.

As much I tried to get into reading this book I absolutely failed. I found it hard to connect with the main characters, particularly Izzie who seemed to think she was chocolate and the plot just seemed completely random.

To cut a long story short, Izzie is a witch who lives with her mother. She is in love with the very popular Mark and together they attend high school with Izzie’s best friend, Brangane, the three of them being a really close knit trio. Izzie is desperate for Brangane to have a boyfriend so she takes a love potion that her mother has created to school aiming to get Brangane and Tristan (new boy at school) to drink it thereby falling in love. Things go wrong of course and Izzie and Tris end up drinking it and falling in love. High jinks and emotional struggles ensue for a while and then out of the blue (or at least it seemed that way to me) a two-headed dog appeared...That I’m afraid to say is where I put the book down. I think I was about a quarter of the way through so I have no idea what happened at the end. No risk of spoilers here then!!

I think my biggest issue with this book is the writing style. When I’m reading I like the words to flow off the page or have some kind of punch to them. This had neither. I felt the language used was overly simplistic, almost child-like and I found myself getting more and more frustrated as I turned the pages. The way that the concept of magic is included in the book seems really rushed and lacks credibility as does everyone’s acceptance of the weird creature that just seemed to show up. IT WAS A TWO-HEADED RABID DOG PEOPLE?!

Rant over! As I said the idea behind this story is great and there are other classics which have been re-told that I have enjoyed. I’m sorry to say that this is not among them which is a shame because it had great potential.

Don't be scared

Today we have artist Lisa Denyer at Midnight Reads to tell us a little more about herself and her work. Lisa is an ecxiting artist and we are so glad she could pull herself away from her work to join us for some questions!

Let's get started:~

How would you describe your work?

I would describe my art work as contemporary, and heavily influenced by contrasting colours and shapes. I specialise in landscape and abstract painting.

Did you study to be an artist?

Yes, I completed my Fine Art Degree at Coventry University in 2009.

What inspires your work?

My latest project 'Crystal Abstracts' is a series of abstract paintings inspired by a combination of crystals and architectural design. Up until recently, I considered myself to solely be a landscape artist, and it is fair to say that landscapes and the natural world continue to play a big part in my work, albeit in a much more subtle way.

The pieces you see on 'Midnight Reads' were inspired by dark fairy tales, natural forms and silhouettes.

What materials/medium do you prefer to work with?

For a long time I made large scale landscapes using acrylic paint on canvas. I would water log the canvas and build up layered washes of colour and detail to create images. Recently, however, I have begun to work on board as I find that I can get sharper details.

Who is your favourite artist, and why?

When I was in my second year of university in 2008, I went to see Peter Doig's exhibition at the Tate. It remains in my mind as one of the best exhibitions I have seen. It had a vast impact on my work; his large scale landscapes with their jewel like colours inspired me to expand my own scale, and I went from making paintings of around 50cm by 40cm to 152cm by 244cm.

The main thing that struck me from looking at his work was the sinister, dark fairy tale undertones that, to me, made the natural world seem like a place full of possibilities and intrigue. This became something I wanted to capture in my own work.

If you could work with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be?

I think I could gain a lot by working with artists such as Peter Doig, Sydney Nolan and Per Kirkeby.

What is your favourite art work?

One of my favourite paintings is Per Kirkeby's 'Brett-Felsen' (Plank-Rock). I also went to see Kirkeby's exhibition at the Tate, and since then his work has been a particular reference point for me. The aspect I like the most in his work is that, although his paintings are inspired by landscapes, they are extremely abstracted. They are highly emotive pieces, with fantastic use of colour.

Do you have any shows/exhibitions coming up?

Yes, I have a few in the pipeline at the moment:

I loved Finding Sky and was hoping to learn about all the brothers and with Stealing Phoenix we get to know more about Yves and his Soulfinder. I just can't wait to read all about the other brothers!

Phoenix has been born into a community of Savants and knows nothing but a life of thievery that could cost her her own life if she comes back home empty handed. Controled by the Seer, Phee has no way out, he can make her think and do what he wants and makes life more than difficult. Phee has the ability to freeze time to allow her to pick pockets, a modern day Artful Dodger and she is getting by just fine but Phee's life is turned upside down when the Seer gives her a mark to steal from. This is a new thing for Phee and to make matters worse the person she is stealing from is not only a member of the Benedict family but he is her Soulfinder.

Yves Benedict is the second youngest of the Benedict brothers and on his trip to London he is robbed by Phee. But his Savant abilities go into overdrive and he blows up his belongs before Phee gets a chance to hand them over to the Seer burning her in the process. And when Phee has the balls to turn up the next day for another chance to steal his things he is amazed to discover she is his Soulfinder.

He is good-looking, smart, wise, and wants nothing more than to protect his souldfinder. She is strong, street-wise, and has a spirit of fire. As the fates bring the two together they are faced with heartbreaking decisions and that could cost the lives of the ones they love.

Stirling has again written a strong story that sends her readers on a roller coaster of emotions as we follow the relationship of Yves and Phee. They are both strong characters and know what they want which makes their relationship an exciting one to follow and Stirling doesn't make it easy for them. I love how Stirling's characters have more to them than the whole, I've seen him, I love him, I have to have him, yes there are elements of this but there is a fight to be had to get what you want on more than just a physical level. There is more substance to her characters especially her female characters who are strong willed and believable.

Yves and Phee's story is a truly heartfelt one than will keep you wondering if the two will actually be together or if they will be torn apart by the choices that are made for them.

I love Stirling's writing and I can't wait to see who's next in line to meet their soulfinder. This series is set to be another fantastic one and I urge you to read the first two books, you will not be disappointed!

Fave line: I say “my age” because for all the passing of nearly eight hundred years, I am still sixteen in my person, just as I will be sixteen when you who read this are old, then dead, then forgotten.

Blood is the first book in the Mercian trilogy. It is the story of William of Mercia, an 800 year old vampire who was changed in the year 1256. Point to note: He prefers to be called undead as opposed to vampire! After he wakes from a 20 year sleep his first mission is to find someone to feed off. He comes across Jex, a homeless guy who it transpires already knows about him and who has possession of a notebook which contains pictures of a girl who, Jex claims, needs him as much as he needs her. It isn’t long before he meets the girl in the pictures, a homeless girl called Eloise who before long is taken into his confidence as they both set out to find out who ‘changed’ him. They enlist the help of Chris and Rachel who run a vegan restaurant and who have a love for the paranormal and before long they find that they are trying to solve a mystery surrounding William that goes back centuries becoming increasingly darker as they get closer to the truth.

It’s clear from the outset that you are reading part of a trilogy in as much as the characters are given plenty of room to develop and the plot flows at a comfortable pace rather than being squeezed into the first fifty pages. There are, naturally I think going to be comparisons with books where vampires are the primary characters, especially when you are looking at a budding relationship between a vampire and a mortal (and I guess I’m primarily thinking about Edward and Bella here). There are some similarities that would be near impossible to avoid, after all, he’s a vampire, she’s human, his bloodlust is bound to prevent the path to true love from running smoothly! That said I didn’t find myself comparing the characters that are written about here to any other. Their backgrounds and personalities are so disparate that it was never an issue for me. Something else that stood out for me was that there was nothing overly sentimental about this book which I liked, although there is enough emotion surrounding the characters that it’s very easy to like them, particularly William who is such a tortured old soul!

I also like the way that the book reads. The language that K.J Wignall uses has a more classic, gothic feel to it than most YA vampire fiction which made a refreshing change. I also liked reading about the way in which William encounters things for the first time (born again Christians and the Big Issue to name a couple). It’s these tiny details that set it ever so slightly apart from other books of this genre. In short I found this a fun book to read and would absolutely recommend it to YA readers of all ages.

3.5/5 I look forward to seeing what happens to the lovely William in book 2!

Fave line: Let people call rock and roll the music of the devil all they want; some of it, not all but some, is divine.

The Sleepwalkers is essentially a YA horror story and you can pre-empt the darkness of the novel based on the opening paragraphs of the first chapter which describe a nightmare that the main character Caleb is having. Caleb is described as a skinny 18 year old who has just graduated from high school and who has everything to look forward to. As he planning to travel to Africa to enhance his profile as a journalist he receives a letter from his old friend Christine addressed to Billy (his childhood name) begging him to come and help her. Together with his friend Bean they travel down to Florida (leaving behind Amber, his rather needy girlfriend) to his old childhood home to find that not only has his father gone missing but there have, over the years been many incidents of people from the sleepy town going missing over the years but no-one seems to be doing anything about it.

They eventually make their way to the Dream Centre, a hospital that now exists within the old mental where plenty of patients seem to enter but no-one seems to leave. Here they find Christine who is a patient in the hospital. She tries to explain that an evil force is determined to bring about the end of the world and it eventually emerges that he, Caleb is ‘the bringer of death’. With the help of Anna, the spirit of Christine’s missing sister who vanished when Caleb dared her to go into the old institute, the friends set out to put a stop to everything happening around the town. It turns out however that the influence that the protagonist has on the area is greater than it first appears and the main characters in the book find themselves fighting to survive against what seem to be increasingly insurmountable odds.

There’s something quite refreshing about the way that Gates writes. His style is quite snappy, almost disjointed at times but that doesn’t make it any less descriptive than any of the other YA books that I’ve read. It just gets to the point a lot faster. You could almost imagine that rather than reading a book you are in fact listening to the story being told to you as there’s an almost conversational element to it at times. I particularly liked Caleb’s friend Bean. It was I felt Bean that seemed to have all the witty one-liners and had a more rounded personality than the rest of the characters in the book. That said there was enough information about everyone mentioned that you felt as though you had a fairly detailed picture of them as you ran through the story. I think the way that the plot unfolds makes it easy to see how this book could be easily turned into a film as it follows the plotlines of a well crafted teen horror movie and contains all the elements you would expect a film of this genre to have. I also loved the twist at the end of the book – certainly didn’t see that coming!

In short, I enjoyed reading this book as it was a step away from the usual YA fiction. I would recommend this for readers aged 15+ years who are looking for something more akin to classic horror tales. You won’t be disappointed!

I am interested in capturing a precious, jewel-like quality within my paintings whilst also retaining a free, abstract feel.
I have always been fascinated by natural shapes and silhouettes.

Although I don’t believe that nature can be replicated in its intricacy and intensity, I want to capture its sublime aspect in a contemporary way. I do this by depicting images such as mountains and forests, inherently Romantic images, as simplified motifs.

I was very much inspired by Romanticism and the sublime when I made these pieces. I used images of deep, dark forests to create a fairytale element, in order to evoke the vibrancy, possibilities and intrigue which are synonymous with the natural settings in fantasy stories. I hoped to mesh fairytale ideals with themes of an environmentally Utopian future. The images are void of human activity, allowing room for the viewer to create their own narrative.

Ok, so here's my very first IMM - woohoo!! I wasn't sure that I would have a lot to say today because I spent the first half of the week at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - wrong! I decided to take the one book with me (Divergent which is a re-read), thinking that I would probably squeeze a chapter in here and there, between shows, before I crashed for the night etc but that was so not the case. I left for Scotland with one book and came back with four! All I can say is thank god the passenger in front of me got his case stuck in the device that measures luggage. But for that a certain no-frills airline would probably have charged me a fortune! The good news was that I loved each and every one of them!

Wherever you go had me gripped from the first line. A YA/paranormal novel it deals with a variety of issues from losing a loved one to teen depression to Alzheimer’s, divorce and the responsibilities that come with being a young carer. Reeling off such a list might give you the impression that this is a heavy read but in actual fact that is far from the case. I found this tale to be both thought provoking and heart warming and the way that Heather Davis writes tugs on the heart strings on more than one occasion!

The story’s main character is Holly who has recently survived a car crash in which her boyfriend Rob is killed. While she is still in the process of coming to terms with her loss, Holly also attends school and acts as main carer for her younger sister whilst her mother who is single works two jobs. She then also finds herself taking on the role of carer for her Grandfather who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Enter Jason, Rob’s best friend with whom she starts to strike up a relationship, although their recent loss means they both bring some pretty substantial baggage with them. Both however are oblivious to the fact that Rob has failed to move on from this life and now exists in their world as a ghost. For his part Rob finds himself forced to stand on the sidelines and watch everyone that he cares about grieving for him as well as watching the girl he loves move on to a new life away from him. That is until he realises that Holly’s Grandfather can see him. It is this realisation that sets in motion a chain of events that lead to a beautifully written and emotional conclusion as Rob tries to find his way out of this world and to help everyone around him find some kind of resolution.

The story is told from three perspectives, namely; Holly’s, Rob’s and Jason’s. I liked how each character was written in a different person i.e. Holly is written in the first person, Rob in the second and Jason in the third and I also liked the way that the three plots weave together using the different viewpoints. From the outside looking in you can see the burden that weighs Holly down as she struggles to hold everything together and you get frustrated by her mother’s ignorance to the situation, although perhaps it’s more about denial than ignorance. I also felt really sorry for Jason who had clearly been infatuated with Holly for a long time but who now resides in Rob’s shadow. Most heartbreaking I thought was the struggle that Rob experiences, especially as he watches Holly, Jason and his parents who are still mourning his death. Every line of his broke my heart just a little bit. I felt instantly attached to all of the characters in the story each of which has their own struggle. I also love the parallel between Rob and Aldo whereby Rob is prevented communicating with the outside world because of his current state and Aldo is able to foresee a time when he is in the same position as a result of his progressive condition. The bond that the two forge is really lovely to read. I also love the list that Aldo writes which contains the things he doesn’t want to forget – just beautiful.

I could actually keep on writing about this book forever. There are many other angles to this story but I don’t want to give too much away. I was transfixed from the outset and love the range of emotions that it evokes as you read it. As I said earlier, there are a range of issues that are dealt with and I’ve no doubt that many of these will strike a chord with the readers. I was therefore also impressed at the addition of the helplines at the back of the book. I think these could serve to be very useful.

I love this book completely, even though it left me in mourning for days!! Can’t wait to buy a copy of this for my bookshelf. One caution - It’s a weepie and you’ll need tissues!

We join Bryan Lankford in nineteenth century England, as a somewhat troublesome but more than talented teenager. Lankford is rather full of himself and thinks he can get away with anything he does that is until his father, a wealthy nobleman, has had enough, and banishes him to America with nothing but his sword. While on the docks waiting to leave Lankford is Marked a vampire and he boards a dragon-prowed ship to America, resulting in a new name and a new fate.

As he grows Dragon Lankford becomes a Sword Master, and learns there are challenges and perks one of which becomes Anastasia, the newest Professor of Spells and rituals at the House of Night. Anastasia becomes concerned about the effect Dragon is having on the other students and decides to cast a spell to let the vampires know that their future is not with the arrogant young fledgling. But Anastasia's spell has a side affect she wasn't expecting and when a dark power threatens the vampires she and Dragon grow closer.

I'm a fan of the house of night books and like most other fans I couldn't wait for this novella and after reading it it has me excited all over again and I can't wait for the next book to be released!

The writing in this books feels a little different from the main books but I think it worked well for Dragon's story. I think this novella is a brilliant insight into Dragon's life and it sure gives a new dimension to the other books. I must admit, I love the cocky Dragon but I love how he becomes vampire we know. And I can't wait to see how Dragon's tale will affect the next book.

I also love the art work in this book. It's not something we have really seen in the House of Night books but there is something magical about this book and the love story that evolves and the images add to the enchantment.

Review ~ Cinder & Ella ~ Melissa Lemon

After their father’s disappearance, and their mother's heart is broken Cinder is forced to look after her family. She leaves home for a servant job at the castle to help bring money into the family home. While she is away her sister Ella runs away from home because her own mother doesn't even recognise her anymore and she can't cope with the demands of her other two sisters. But soon enough there is a mission to find Ella to return her to the kingdom and to the Prince who is dark and dangerous.

I thought, like many others, this book would be a retelling of the classic Cinderella, but other than the name there is not much else in common with the original fairytale. The story became an original tale within itself. There was no fairy godmother or glass slipper or pumpkins, instead we have knights, an evil dark Prince and soul trees. I found the first half of the book a little slow and the other two sisters, Katrina, Beatrice really annoyed me however, Beatrice did grow on me in the end. There wasn't much character development as the story really became about Ella and her fight to save herself and the kingdom.

I did like the relationship between Ella and her knight, Tanner, and the scene where he stays awake for hours clearing her soul tree of the prince's weeds really does pull at the heart strings. I love how they grow as characters but I wish others would have been given the same chance.

I just wish the first half of the book had been more like the first half and I would have loved for the soul trees to be part of the story more and explored further. I would recommend this book if you are looking for something completely different, just be prepared for a slow start.

Review ~ Circle 9 ~ Anne Heltzel

I’ve taken a while to think about the review that I wanted to write for this book because the subject matter is at times much darker and reads more like a psychological thriller than your typical YA fiction.

The story begins with Abby, a young girl who finds herself regaining consciousness in mysterious circumstances. Lying next to the remains of a burning building and having completely lost her memory she is helped by Sam, a teenage boy who she cannot remember even thought he claims to know her. Sam takes her back to his home which turns out to be a cave which exists far away from the relative dangers of Circle Nine, an area which, he tells Abby is not to be trusted. Within no time she has adopted him as her angel and the two appear to be completely smitten with each other. For the first part of the book their lives together are seemingly idyllic. They live in the opulently decorated cave which Abby describes as being like paradise whilst Sam adopts the role of Abby’s protector, he feeds her, reads to her and cares for her every whim whilst she in turn is in absolute awe of him. They are the cutest of couples.

Within in a few weeks however things begin to fall apart. A darker side to Sam begins to emerge which leaves you feeling on-edge permanently. At the same time Abby is desperately trying to put the random flashbacks she is experiencing into some kind of order as she tries to piece together her previous life. As her memory starts to return so her situation becomes increasingly ominous. You begin to realise that the world that Abby sees herself in is not quite as heavenly as it first appeared and the brief inclusion of two other characters namely Sid and Amanda only go support your suspicions further. By the end of the book when Abby’s memory does return we find that her earlier life and the way that it ended was far more traumatic than was anticipated. Her journey back to reality is a harrowing one and we, the reader, get to experience every detail with her. You find yourself praying for resolution not just for her but also for Sam. It was Sam’s character that left me most torn. You see his dark side (and when it reveals itself it really is quite sinister) but then you also see the remorse and you end up hoping that he too can find some kind of peace.

There are aspects to this book that are incredibly dark that touch on sensitive issues and for that reason I wouldn’t recommend this book to younger YA readers. That said,the darker content is also what makes the book. Abby’s story would not have had the impact that it did on me were it not for the way that it was detailed. I have to say I love the way that Anne Heltzel writes. The beginning of the relationship between Sam and Abby is very romantic and the language she uses is so rich and warm that it makes your heart melt. I found that I carried that same warmth for the characters with me even when they were at their worst because I felt as though I knew how they had gotten to that point and I could still see the good inside them. If I could have found them and rescued them I would have! The twists and turns in the plot had me gripped from start to finish. I was a tad frustrated by the ending when I first read it. As much as I enjoy being able to add my own twist to the end of a plotline I felt as though there were some areas (well one, but I shan’t give the game away here) where I needed just a bit more detail. I guess though that could also be the point of such an ending, that is, the reader is left to imagine what happens next.

For anyone who enjoy darker fiction or thrillers this is a must read. I look forward to seeing what Anne Heltzel produces next.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5. I would absolutely recommend this book. I found it to be a challenging read at times. It is not all hearts and flowers by any stretch of the imagination but it is thought provoking and a gripping read from start to finish.

Janelle Duvall has been in Palm Grove, Florida a week when a hurricane hits. Janelle is confused by her usual safety-conscious father who wants to just stay put in their home, but after her pleas and a little help from the police they finally make it to a safety shelter. While there Janelle is forced to leave the shelter as she rescues a child, and as she does Gary falls out of the hurricane. The first thing she notices is that he has a gray spiral birthmark which matches the one she has.

Janelle wants answers about the birthmark and just when she seems to be getting nowhere with her father Gary provides the answer for her, only she doesn't believe it. She discovers she is a Tempest who is on path to become a hurricane. Only Janelle can't handle the news and after discovering she is wanted for mass destruction and soon ends up trying to run away with Gary to escape her fate.

I love the idea that hurricanes are transformed people who not only destroy but also save, as we learn in the story. The characters are well developed and all have their own Tempest history which I loved reading about.

Although there are undertones of a possible relationship but I applause Hook for being brave enough to keep it out of this first installment, yes I'm sure it will come with book 2, but it was great to read about Janelle and see her transformation throughout the book without the need of love to get her through everything!
I'm not going to lie though, the character annoyed me a little as it felt like it took her forever to finally realise what she was destined to do.
I really liked Gary as a character too, I did wonder at times if he was a good guy or a bad guy but I think you will just have to read to find that one out for yourself ;)

I rather enjoyed Tempest. Is it full of suspense, mystery and adventure. It is an action-packed ride that will keep you reading until the end. Hook has created something highly original and refreshing in a time of vampires and werewolves.

I look forward to reading book 2.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns is an excellent fantasy adventure story. I say story, it reads more like an epic than it does your typical YA fiction tale. There is a historic Spanish backdrop to this tale which Carson details so intricately I found it very easy to place myself in the countries that she describes, both in terms of the landscape, the buildings, the clothes, the people and the food (Oh the food!!).

The main character is Elisa who, at the beginning of the story, begrudgingly finds herself being married off to the King of Joya d’Arena on her 16^th birthday. Whilst her older sister is to ascend the throne in Orovalle, it is decreed that Elisa has been chosen to go into service. This is because of the appearance of the godstone, a living gem, which resides in her navel and which is given to her by god during her naming ceremony. Service we soon learn is a commitment to humanity and it is expected the Elisa will carry out an act in the future which will benefit mankind. It is also something that requires knowledge and courage and at the start of the story it becomes apparent that Elisa does not appear to have a great deal of the latter. Rather she sees herself as lazy, fat and useless in comparison to her sister.

With her new husband by her side she arrives in Joya d’Arena to find out that her marriage is a secret and soon discovers that not everyone is as trustworthy as they first appear. As she tries to determine her purpose as bearer of the godstone she is kidnapped and suddenly finds herself immersed in a dangerous world where she as the bearer is coveted and where only she is able to save those caught up in a bitter war which threatens her country as well as those she loves. Magic, sorcery and good old fashioned battles all have their place in this book and they make for an exciting read!

By the time I finished this book I felt as though I had gone on the journey with Elisa. I had seen her struggle with and beat her neuroses (mainly to do with her weight and her lack of self worth) and watched as her and her friends struggle in the war against the Inviernos. Her transformation through the book is wonderful to read and you find yourself cheering her on as she realises how strong she is. There are some fantastic characters in this book, most notably Alejandro, the husband who is not as strong as first thought; Rosario, his son from his first marriage; Cosme who becomes a good friend to Elisa, Humberto, Cosme’s brother and Hector, Alejandro’s personal guard. Each character is more complex than first appears and I love the way that their plot lines develop as well as the way they interact with Elisa, which isn’t always pleasant. There is of course a dash of romance but this is by no means a romantic YA story, far from it. There are bigger plot lines that run through this book that make for a thrilling read and one I found hard to put down.

The story is tied up quite nicely at the end of book one so you do feel a certain sense of closure when you reach the final page. I’ll be interested to see where book two picks up. I now also have a soft spot for certain characters in this series and I do harbour hopes for a romance in the next book. Fingers crossed!

4/5 I really enjoyed this and would absolutely recommend it. You may need a plate of pastries nearby as you read. In fact I’d say it’s a certainty!

We are so excited about having Johanna at the blog to answer our questions we love her work!! As you know we came across Johanna's work on twitter and we are so happy that twitter is constantly introducing us to a world of talent!

Here's what we had to ask Johanna:

1) Did you always want to be an artist?

I knew I always wanted to work in the Creative field, but I wasn't sure exactly what as. I went through phases of wanting to be a fashion designer, an architect, an interior designer and a textile designer - but ultimately, I knew I wanted to draw. I wasn't one of those kids who wanted to be a nurse or a pop star or an astronaut, it was always art.

2) Does anything influence your work?

Yes, thousands of things! I think its impossible for a creative person to filter out the stuff that surrounds them and for it not to influence their work. Wether it's a comic strip, a mosaic in a bathroom, flowers in a garden, a big scary guy's tattoos on the bus or the label on some crazy health food drink - all those little bits and pieces get stashed away in my brain and somehow make their mark on what I do.

3) Who is your favourite artist?

I've got loads and in all different disciplines and styles. The list is constantly changing but here's some selected highlights at the moment:

4) If you could work with an artist, living or deceased who would it be and why?

Banksy or Vivienne Westwood.
I admire their work ethics, their creative genius and the clever way they've lead their field and continually pushed the boundaries of what is perceived as possible in their disciplines.
Also, I think collaborations work best when both parties bring something different to the table, be it backgrounds, skills or ideals. There's no point wishing to work with someone who's work is along the same lines as me, from a completely selfish point of view, I 'd like to work with someone who can challenge me and teach me new skills.

5) How does it feel to work on a book cover, is it any different to your other work?

Every job is different, but I guess the things that make a book cover different is that you have to convey the author's vision of the story on a relatively small canvas. You have to condense all their words and years of hard work into one little picture which will help entice the reader in. For me, this is a big responsibility. When I work on a book cover, I'm usually commissioned by an Art Director who handles all the layout and type, so I work with them to create an illustration which can then be dropped into their final vision of the book cover.
Scale is also important. We live in a world where the biggest book store is Amazon, so the artwork has to scale well and still act as an ambassador for the story when it's reduced down to just pixels on a screen. This can be tricky for me as my work is often very intricate and fine, but that's where having an Art Director comes into its own. They completely understand the print to digital process and can guide me on how to create an amazing image for print which will also translate strongly online.

6) From all the work you have created which is your favourite?

Fringecover : an interactive illustration
commission using Twitter.

I was particularly pleased with the Fringe Cover I did for last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Fringe is the world's largest Art's festival, so it was a very high profile project and I was aware a lot of people would see the final artwork across all the marketing and promotional materials for the event. We used Twitter to crowd source content suggestions for the design, then I worked with the guys at Whitespace in Edinburgh to create the final illustration. It was a challenging, but very rewarding project. In fact, it won a Scottish Design Award earlier this year which is was very cool.

7) Can you share with us what you are working on at the moment?

A couple more book covers (one of which is the follow-on to Amy's Die for Me, called Until I Die.)
Some album artwork for a singer (to be released in the autumn, I can't say any more just yet!)
Some billboard illustrations for the marketing campaign of a Shopping Centre in England.
A textile design for a handbag company.
A label design for a special edition beer by super cool Scottish brewery, BrewDog.

8) If you wasn't an artist what do you think you be doing?

A florist.
I love flowers.

They were scorched deeper on the last occasion in my room at the inn. Time was running out. The power of the blood jar was almost at an end.”

I began reading these books when I was 11 years old, and at nearly 19 I am still hooked. The great thing about The Wardstone Chronicles is that the writing style never alienates despite becoming a year older every time a new book is released!
The book begins with Tom, Alice and the Spook himself fleeing the war in the County and travelling to Ireland, finding new dangers and demons to do battle with once they step ashore. As well as the Fiend himself after young Tom, he also faces the threat of the Morrigan, an ancient goddess from the dark.
As always, the pace is fast, and the moments where you feel the fear reading late at night are still there! Delaney

There are huge events that change matters for the characters forever, complicating relationships and attracting more danger than ever before. Stand-offs, kidnappings, out of body experiences and nightmarish threats aplenty.

As the books have moved along, the dark has been growing more and more, and enemies are appearing from the shadows continuously. You can just tell the story is coming to an end, a large, cataclysmic stand-off no doubt, but I am very glad it is not this book the series ends with. I need more!

Addictive, easy to read but never bland or simple, I cannot recommend this series enough. If there are any Spook fans who drifted away from the books or stopped for one reason or another (although I doubt the numbers are few) you must continue as this story is far from over... Everyone else, get starting!!
’s Destiny’s descriptions are matter-of-fact, and the characters retain that mysterious quality they always had since the beginning. These books always have you question the characters’ loyalties, as well as whether things that happen are real, or illusions from the dark...’t give away too much of the story as the whole premise of the series is the suspense and uncertainty of the future. You cannot read this book without reading the others in the series, as there are many references to past events that are vital to understanding the story.

Review: Forever~Maggie Stiefvater

So finally the readers of Maggie Stiefvater’s The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy have closure. I was very late coming to this series so thankfully haven’t had to go through the frustration that fans of the series will have had to endure as they wait for the final book to be released. I only had to wait a couple of weeks for the release of Forever and that was torturous enough!

Forever is a superb finale to the trilogy. Having gone from figuring out her bond with the wolves which leads to her relationship with Sam, Grace now finds out that in a cruel twist of fate the virus that has lain dormant in her for years has awoken and as Sam adjusts to life as a ‘normal’ human again so Grace has to acknowledge that she is now a wolf. We pick up the story at the point where spring has arrived and Grace is now shifting back to her human body, albeit erratically as she struggles to control her switching between her two forms. Sam is now public enemy number one as he finds that he and Beck are implicated in not only Grace’s disappearance and possible death but also in the brutal murder of another girl. Shelby seems to be more out of control than ever and causing all kinds of bad publicity for the pack and Cole and Isobel are still apart although it is clear that neither want this to be the case. For their part, Isobel continues to struggle with her parents grief stricken behaviour which clashes horrendously with her devotion to her friends whilst Cole seems to be convinced that he’s the world next Louis Pasteur as he searches for a cure which will prevent the wolves from shifting should they want to. Worse is to come when Isobel finds out that her father has managed to successfully organise a cull of the wolves of Mercy Falls.

I liked the way that Stiefvater has wrapped up this story. Sam’s vulnerability still shines through in this book although it’s for a whole new variety of reasons. Grace’s struggle is beautifully written and the relationship between the two main characters is as tortured as it ever was given the switch in their circumstances. I also found myself more drawn to Cole and Isobel in this book. Thus far both characters had irritated me. I knew that deep down there was more going on than they were prepared to admit to the outside world but they didn’t seem to have the guts to do anything about it and that left me frustrated. In this book they really come into their own as they fight their inner demons and make a stand, particularly Isobel and I found myself really rooting for her at the end. One thing that didn’t change was my desire to give Grace’s and Isobel’s parents a healthy slap as for the most part they continue to bumble along in their own self-obsessed little worlds (I did have a glimmer of hope for Grace’s Mum at one point though!)

I don’t want to say too much about the storyline as I don’t want to give anything away. All I will say is help and betrayal turns up in the most unexpected of places in this book as the book crashes headlong into the cull that ends this chapter of Sam and Grace’s lives. The main characters are left to make choices which will dramatically change their lives, possibly even end them and the last few chapters had me completely gripped. One of the highlights of these books for me is the way that Stiefvater has left so much to the imagination. She provides just enough information throughout the story and leaves you to fill in the gaps for yourself rather than spoon feeding you the finer details. Some scenes are heartbreakingly beautiful whilst others make you so tense you have to go back and re-read sections because you’re so desperate to discover what the final outcome is for Sam and Grace that you start to skim the pages (or at least I did!). Forever is a perfect ending to the trilogy although I should point out here that if Maggie Stiefvater perhaps wanted to write another book about Sam and Grace, well I wouldn’t complain.

Keira and Amanda are twin sisters who have moved to Everstock with their parents and have to start their senior year at a new school. But the twins are totally different, Amanda is the popular, beautiful one and Keira lives in her shadow.
At their new school Amanda is quick to make friends and soon becomes one of the it crowd while Keira is left an outsider.If the girls parents like Amanda better than Keira.

Things for the twins take a turn for the worst as there is a terrible car accident. While Amanda is confined to a hospital bed Keira's life is beginning to change. As she recovers from the accident Keira learns she is developing mysterious powers. And as she begins to home in on these new supernatural powers is drawn more and more to Cooper, the mysterious boy around school.

As the two spend more time together it is clear that fate has brought them together but fate might also be ready to take it all away from them.

Ok, there are things I love about this book then things I don't! I love Keira's character and find myself warming to her and feeling sorry for her. I also really like Keira's friends and find that they are nice secondary characters. I hate Keiras mum! I just don't understand how a mother can be so horrible to her daughter, and she stops Keira seeing Amanda in the hospital. Her mother is just mean!! Her dad also annoys me, he just seems to go from one extrema to another. Even though Amanda comes across as the spoilt rich kid I actually liked her and I love how different the twins are.

I really like how Keira's character develops throughout the book and I love how she starts standing up for herself. Her relationship with Cooper feels like it comes out of no where and sometimes I found it confusing, he hardly speaks to her to begin with and won't tell her anything (a little Twilightish) but towards the end of the story their relationship grows and I really warm to them as a couple.

I like the supernatural powers that Keria develops and I love the scene in the hospital with her and Amanda as she helps her twin find herself.

The book is the first in the Vampire Shadow series but the only mention of vampires is that an infection as taken hold of the town and the thing victims have in common is two small holes on their neck. And we get the odd mention of a strange creature in the book and then again at the end. The ending is a little rushed and part of me felt confused with what had just happened.

I think the idea of the book is great and if it had been longer, its only about 160 pages, it would have been perfect. Characters and relationships could have developed more, I just feel like so much has been left unsaid but I wonder where this story will go in the next book.

WOW! Just WOW! Why didn't I read this book sooner?

I think the above, taken from goodreads, tells you enough about the book and I kinda wish something similar was written on the back of the book itself.

I will admit this is a book I looked at over and over in work and for some reason I never bought it. But then one of my customers couldn't stop talking about it and we have very similar tastes. Before I had chance to buy the book she had come back into the shop and said 'read it, you'll love it' and boy did I love it!

Finding Sky is a story that pulls at your heart strings as you are dragged into Sky's world and the journey she is on to find herself and understand her past. Her past is locked deep in her mind and only her Savant and his family can help her unlock the doors.

I really like Sky, sure she has troubling dealing with what Zed has to tell her, who wouldn't, and yes she may have trouble dealing with her past but she isn't weak and I love how she grows throughout the story. She allows herself to finally let go and trust Zed and his family as they help her on her path to discovery/recovery.

And now for Zed *swoons a little* (sorry, I couldn't help myself). He is everything I want in a leading man. He is strong, protective, and arrogant, as well as loving and caring. He would do anything to protect Sky. But Zed also has his own demons to deal with and he needs his Savant just as much as she needs him.

The relationship between Zed and Sky develops at a nice pace and I hope to hear more from them throughout the other brother's books.

Speaking about the other brothers, Zed comes from a large family, he is the seventh son, and his brothers are all great characters. You feel each of them has a real purpose and I can't wait to read each of their books!

I think that is actually what I'm going to love most about this series, each brother is going to get his own story but we still get the rest of the family.

Stirling has created a world I would happily get lost in! Let me know if you feel the same!

Wow! A great novella with so much going on. You'll finish it in one sitting!!

Lily Westbrook is half witch half vampire who has been raised by her aunt after her parents, Clarie and Nathaniel's forbidden love and marriage does not go unpunished.

We start this story with Lily about to turn 18 and come into the full use of her powers. She is moving back to her birth town to go to university where she soon learns the truth about her parents as well as herself and just how important she really is.

I love the idea of the story because in the world Mesina has created witches and vampires are sworn enemies, which is something I haven't read before. But as we know Lily is made up of both which has resulted in her becoming the Goddess of Night.

I love this book, I just wish there was more of it. I love all the characters in this book. Lily, Roxy, Drew and Xander become our main character's all helping each other in order to find answers to their own questions. The group blends well and I like the fact that the author is slowly building their relationships with each other even though the book is moving at fast pace. I can't wait to see how the characters develop in book 2!!

The story is short and so much happens that I don't want to spoil it for you so get hold of a copy any way you can and just read it!!! You will not be disappointed with the world Mesina has created!

I'm all ready looking forward to book 2!!

The House of Sherbet is a short read with less than 200 pages and although it's easy to tell something isn't right about Granddad Sherbet the story starts off a little slow. But the action in this supernatural story picks up and doesn't stop throughout the second half of the book.

Granddad Sherbet and his friends are blessed with supernatural powers and are on a quest to not only take over the country but to live forever and will stop at nothing to get what they want. Granddad Sherbet has been trying to perfect his magical abilities for years which has resulted in him creating 'beings' from the old Oak tree. Viemar is one of these beings and has taken on the responsibility of keeping Jake safe from his Granddad.

Jake is a great character, he is strong and soon becomes a leader. His mission his to save his parents from what his Grandfather has done to them and not become like his granddad. He really grows as a character throughout the story as he learns not only what his Granddad can do but what he is capable of himself.

I found some of the supporting characters really added to this story and I love Genevieve and Viemar. The only character I was a little unsure of was Stan, I found myself wondering if Jake and the other's really needed him.

I think the author has created some great characters, he has the right blend of 'goodies' and 'badies' and the bad guys really are the kind of characters you dislike and I can't wait for their downfall.

Overall I thought The House of Sherbet was a good little read and I look forward to seeing what Jake and the others get up to next, I really hope they can stop Granddad and his supernatural friends.

Title: Solid
Author: Shelley Workinger

Teens who discover they were secretly genetically altered before birth are brought together at a classified site where they forge new friendships, find love, develop "super-abilities," and even unearth a conspiracy.

Opening Line: As per his nightime routine, he checked the security panel to ensure that the system would alert him of any intrusions on the perimeter he'd set around the lad.

Closing Line: We'd find a way to work things out, because what we had was real, Solid.

Clio Kaid is bought to a home-from-home state-of-the-art compound by the military as they try to discover more about a drug named C9x, as it has had an effect on her and 99 other teenagers, giving them super-human abilities. 17 years prior to this a rogue doctor decided to experiment on 100 unsuspecting pregnant women with a chromosomal drug but when he was killed it seemed all evidence died with him, except for the 100 babies. Now Clio and the other teenagers are ready to learn more about themselves and the drug that altered their very being.

Clio soon makes friends and I really like that there is a real mix of characters, I love Miranda and hope to see more of her in the next book. She is very much for herself and wants to be center of attention, she an all round queen b!! But the group seem to fit together perfectly.

And what's YA without a romance!?! Jack is Clio's love interest and honestly, he's sooooo sweet!! I loved the star scene in the book but I'm not going to say anymore because I don't want to spoil it for you!

We quickly learn that not everyone is who they say they are at the facility and Clio and her new genetically altered friends are on their own mission to discover why they are really wanted by the military.

I really enjoyed Solid! I thought it was obvious who the 'bad-guy' was but I was totally shocked to find out the reason why!

Soild is a great little read and the series has potential! I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!

We are so excited here at Midnight Reads to have Laura with us to answer some questions we have about her and Clara.
Thank for joining us today Laura, let's get started!

1) We know Cupcakes for Clara started 4 years ago but how long have you been working as an artist/crafter?

I started crafting properly the day after I drew those first doodles of Clara. I wanted to make a doll of her, and so I got stitching. Before then I have worked as a puppet maker in animation for many years, which I love, but never really on my own projects. Although when I was little, as my mum loves to remind me, I was constantly making things. Blue Peter style of course!

2) Have you undertaken any form of training or study?

I studied art at school, and did an animation degree at university. Getting to grips with the intricacies of animation really taught me to be patient with my work, and developed my love of working with tiny fiddly things. I have certainly learnt a lot of crafty skills working as a puppet maker.

3) Does anything influcence your work?

I’m influenced by so many things! My children, other crafters work, a particular piece of fabric, a combination of colours. Anything! Most of the time ideas spark after Tom and I have a brainstorming session – we seem to bring out each other’s creativity.

4) What is a typical working day for you?

I’m still on maternity leave at the moment, so I squeeze in work whenever I can. Usually after the little ones have gone to bed in the evening I’ll get a couple of hours to draw or sew.

5) Do you have a favourite artist/crafter?

I adore Sarah Jane Studios. Her illustrations are just beautiful - she is so very talented. I was lucky enough to receive two of her prints as a gift last year, and I still haven’t found anywhere quite special enough to hang them.

And I have always found Lauren Child’s work outstanding and extremely inspiring. I just love it!

6) If you had to do another job for the day what would it be?

I’m not sure that I could choose a more awesome job than being a puppet maker by day and crafter by night! But if I had to go down a completely different path, I’d probably like to work in a special care baby unit looking after the tiny preemie babies. After having our own baby 10 weeks early last year, I am just amazed at the work those nurses do. That job would be a real honor.

7) Can you share what you are working on with us at the moment?

I have been furiously scribbling away at storyboards for a Clara & Macy picture book for the last few months. I would love to see Miss Bossy Pants Clara published! I nervously sent the storyboards off last week to an interested publisher so I’m currently keeping everything crossed. I’d also like to start re-stocking my little shop over the summer too, so I’m working on designs for that – prints, make your own kits, and possibly Clara dolls.

Review: Between by Cyndi Tefft

It just figures that the love of Lindsey Water's life isn't alive at all, but the grim reaper, complete with a dimpled smile and Scottish accent.

After transporting souls to heaven for the last 300 years, Aiden MacRae has all but given up on finding the one whose love will redeem him and allow him entry through the pearly gates.

Torn between her growing attraction to Aiden and heaven's siren song, Lindsey must learn the hard way whether love really can transcend all boundaries.

Opening line: Ravi's lips were soft and familiar against mine, but my mind was elsewhere.

Closing line: "Aye, my love. I can't think of anything else I'd like more," he said, then bought his lips to mine.

Lindsey's life seems rather normal, perfect infact as her boyfriend tells her that he loves her, however, Lindsey doesn't feel the same. Yet there is no time to dwell on the feelings the two have as the car they are traveling in crashes, ripping Lindsey form the world we know.
As Lindsey wakes she soon realises she is no longer living and is introduced to her Transporter, Aiden. For the last 300 years Aiden has had the responsibility of taking the good to heaven, yet he isn't allowed to enter himself. In his 300 years of transporting he never met anyone like Lindsey and the two quickly fall in love.

Their story is rather a sweet one but at times it felt like it moved a little to fast for me. (I won't say anymore on this as it will totally spoil the story.)
I loved the characters and Aiden sure is the kind of Transporter I'd be wanting.
I really liked how the two could change their surroundings and show each other what their lives were like on earth. I really enjoyed these scenes in the book and though Tefft did a great job with them. It was a unique way for us as readers to learn more about the characters.

Just as I was warming to the two characters and their relationship the unthinkable happens! We know throughout the book that Lindsey must enter heaven and therefore have to leave Aiden but she is taken from him in the most unexpected way. I was totally shocked! It was actually gut wrenching!! I really felt for Lindsey but I feel in the second half of the book we really learnt more about her.

Overall I like this book, I got the ending I wanted from this story and I look forward to the next book.

Heavenly Playlist

Music plays an integral part of my writing. I adore mood. Music helps me add depth and emotion to moments that are especially significant. One of the songs I didn't include on the soundtrack is itself a soundtrack song, the love theme from the television show, Beauty and the Beast. Stunning. If you can find it, listen to a clip.

Mostly, this soundtrack is a good example of the mood and tone of the book. I especially like David Arnold's music for Matthias.

Lose Control, by Evanessence is perfect for Zoe's conflicting feelings at the party. She wonders if Matthias could ever lose control?

Somewhere, by Barbara Striesand is an old favorite of mine. The haunting arrangement is perfect for Zoe's insatiable want of Matthias.

Artist Feature~ Cupcakes for Clara

This week Midnight Reads would like to welcome artist/crafter Laura to the blog. We love Laura's work and actually came across her on twitter. Laura is the wife of author Tom Clempson we love his book but we're not here to talk about Tom today, this is Laura's feature!

Laura's main creation is Clara who we love!!!

Cupcakes for Clara was born one lunchtime at work, I was just doodling and Clara stumbled onto the page. A cheeky, bossy little red-head with a great need for attention. Since that day four years ago, she has never given me a moment’s peace, and has become the basis for my range of handmade goods.

Cupcakes for Clara features handmade toys, stationary, fabric illustrations, home wares, and ‘make your own’ kits. And several pieces of my work have been published in books and magazines. I love designing/sewing soft toys. There is something so wonderful about creating soft toys - they seem to develop their own personalities as you sew them - it’s almost like you’ve created a little person!

I rather enjoyed The Iron King and I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series. What I like about The Iron King is that Kagawa takes the typical Summer and Winter courts along with an element of Shakespeare and adds a new dimention with her introuduction with the Iron Court.

I loved the characters!! Of course, Meghan was scared at times, who wouldn't be with what she goes through but she is also a girl who knows her own mind and isn't afraid to stand up for herself and what she believes in. And then we have the boys, well I should say men when we concider their age. Puck and Ash!! I now understand the whole Team Puck vs Team Ash but I'm not sure I have read enough to make my mind up yet. That said both characters are compelling and I look forward to learning more about each of them.

I really like that Kagawa's writing style is easy and accessible, It gets right to the point with out stumbling over what she wants to say. Although at times I wondered if her writing is a little too simple.

I've gone for 3.5 stars because I think there is room for the characters and story to grow and I can only see this series getting better!!
